Movies of the Adolescent Mind
Looking for the book that will change his life
like the character in “Night
Train to Lisbon”
or finally earn his place in the world
like
the young Montgomery Clift in “Red River”,
He wanders alone
in his life's celluloid mind
as if strapped to a movie
chair forced to watch
the planet deconstruct the words meaning
into two dimensional feelings.
Instead of grapes handed to him
by the angel in “Date with an Angel”
he has popcorn and
springy ancient seating.
Zoom into his bloodshot eyes looking to
find a radiant soul sparkling
as if Madam Curie with microscope
in black and white were there,
find instead emptiness of space
and floating helplessly
like Clooney in “Gravity”.
Fast
forward to where he is now lying almost in state,
aged beyond
certainty of feeling,
beyond the chaos of care and discomfort —
he shifts his mind uncomfortably, pans around the room;
does he
leap off a Berlin balcony, to become mortal,
like the man in
love in “Wings of Desire”, or does he look over his
shoulder,
into his pillow, and realize this is not a movie?
